The question when choosing the right clothing for mountaineering and similar activities is: What does expedition clothing have to achieve at all? Mountaineering, travelling to polar regions or deep-sea fishing demand a lot from outdoor clothing, but first and foremost require it to be insulating, warming, waterproof and windproof. Here not only the material should be convincing - such as Gore Tex - but also the workmanship - for example the seams should be welded or glued. Only then can a winter jacket be absolutely waterproof.

Expedition clothing - especially jackets - for demanding tours should be 3-layer models if possible. Here the lining, membrane and surface material are laminated so that they form a layer. This ensures low weight and absolute robustness. Expedition jackets with down insulation, which still have one of the best insulation properties among clothing materials, are ideal in dry and cold regions. Expedition jackets with a special artificial fibre filling (e.g. Thermatek) are recommended for wet and cold regions and on the high seas, as these also have their full insulating properties when wet.

Heavy backpacks or climbing harnesses can do little harm to the 3-layer system. At the same time the equipment can be used for mountaineering, trekking or climbing. Jackets for such expeditions are designed in such a way that compartments, bags and straps can be reached and operated while in use. On the other hand, a 2-layer winter jacket has the advantage that it behaves softer and more textile and is not as rigid as most 3-layer jackets and can therefore also be worn more flexibly in everyday life - sometimes with, sometimes without an additional fleece jacket or sweater. This makes the winter jacket an ideal companion for leisure and everyday life.

Our tip: If you are planning a longer backpack tour in cold temperatures or extreme weather, a 3-layer jacket made of hard shell is recommended. Since backpack straps strain the upper material, a very robust jacket is important if you want to use it for a long time.
